Scouts is about having fun while gaining leadership skills and self-confidence. As a Scout, you will:

• Experience a variety of exciting adventurous activities – such as mountain biking or rock climbing 
• Learn valuable life skills like leadership, responsibility, and confidence 
• Meet new people and contribute to your community 
• Participate in national and international events, such as Jamborees (large scale camps) and National Schools

“I’ve met new people and made new friends. The leaders are nice – they know how to help people. I like what we do in the week, like cooking nights. We have to organise things ourselves and sometimes we’re not very good at that, but the leaders help us to get better. I’ve overcome fears – I’ve done things that I didn’t think I could do, like going to the National Aviation School and flying a plane.”

Scouts work toward a range of badges and awards that recognise their skills, effort, and personal growth. The programme is flexible and youth-led, allowing each Scout to choose their own path based on interests and challenges. Badges cover areas like outdoor skills, leadership, community service, creativity, and personal development. Scouts can also aim for higher awards by completing more advanced challenges—such as organising hikes, leading activities, or contributing to their community. Every badge earned is a step forward in confidence, capability, and adventure.
For Scouts who want to take their skills further, Scouts Aotearoa offers National Schools—specialised programmes held across New Zealand. These immersive experiences provide expert instruction and hands-on learning in areas such as canoeing, caving, tramping, mountaineering, photography, sailing and aviation.
